Inspiring Person of the Month- Betty Ann Rosa- Galderisi, Beauricua Cosmetics

If you can tell, at all by my previous post, feeling passionate about your work and following your dreams is something that resonates, deeps in me, so when I encounter someone else that displays that same passion- I can’t help but make them an inspiration for me. So I’ve decided each month, I’ll share someone I’ve come across whose work and drive for success can be an inspiration to us all.

November’s Inspiring Person is Betty Ann Rosa-Galderisi, Creator/Founder/Owner of Beauricua Cosmetics. Betty Ann has been in the business of making people beautiful for 30 years and is a licensed Cosmetologist, Esthetician, and Nail Technician with specialties in Make-up Airbrushing and Nail Art. She created Beauricua Cosmetics with the idea of wanting to do something for her Latin community, and she thought what better way to utilize her talents and create a cosmetic line and provide services with women of color in mind. In May 2007, she created Beauricua Cosmetics, honoring her Puerto Rican roots with play of words based on Boricua and Beauty.

I first came across Beauricua Cosmetics early this year while searching if a cosmetic line for Hispanic/Latina women existed. I was a bit skeptical in finding a cosmetic line that catered to such a diverse ethnic group since Latin women come in all types of skin tones. Through my online search I came upon Beauricua Cosmetics. I went on to be more curious to find out more about this makeup line that could make such a bold claim and upon falling in love with vast array of eye shadows, blushes, lipglosses. I realized, what made this line work was that it was understood, no matter the ethnicity, these products where universally flattering to all different skin tones. After being wowed by this line, I became a Facebook fan and followed the blog religiously (as I do with all my beauty companies) so you can imagine my excitement when I was personally contacted by Mrs. Betty Ann herself. She asked what products I personally liked and chatted about what her line offered. She states “I always try my best to get to know our customers. For me is all about making people feel special because they are. Quality comes before quantity because that is what makes a happy customer come back.” Ladies- this is what sets Beauricua Cosmetics apart from all the rest – Betty Ann truly cares what her customers are looking for, listens to them, and does her best to create the product to suit the customer needs.

Creating what the customer wants is so important to Betty Ann, custom made beauty products is a service also offered by Beauricua Cosmetics. Looking for that perfect shade of lipstick to match dress for a special event- Betty can create it.
Favorite lipgloss color discontinued- Betty can recreate it. Love a color in a powder blush, but dries out your skin- Betty can make you a cream blush in that color. What Betty can create is Beauty Magic, and it’s not only limited to wonderful beauty products and custom made orders- she also offers her Make-up Artist services for private occasions!

I can only say great things about Beauricua Cosmetics and the mastermind behind the brand and the proof is in the pudding. You can find Beauricua Cosmetics online and more recently they have been featured at Shecky’s events, even wining an award for their all natural Lip Scrub. It was at this November Shecky’s event I had the pleasure in meeting Betty Ann personally and she is a fabulous, caring, and personable as she seems. I can say I am so impressed by not only her work ethics, and her devotion to servicing the beauty needs of women of all ethnicities, but also in being such an inspiring individual.

Thanks to all!!

First and foremost, I want to send a very special hello and thank you to all my Beauty A La Mode readers, followers, and fans!!! The Blog and Youtube channel had been on a bit of a hiatus since I’ve been very busy with a new chapter in the book of Miss Mandii and you all have been very patient with me.  For that I’m very appreciative of your continued support, which in turn only fuels the motivation for writing on and sharing the latest things that catch Beauty A La Mode’s attention!
Fashion, beauty, writing, broadcasting –all- have been a fascination of mine, therefore creating Beauty A La Mode was my outlet to combine all of these passions into one. But I was given the opportunity, this past September, to work on one of my many other passions -  teaching children.  Between pursuing an Education degree, teaching part-time at a preschool, and contributing to Beauty A La Mode (not to mention Mommy and Wife obligations) things started to get a little hectic, so I decided to go easy and give it a bit of time for everything to settle.
So here we are in November and I am happy to say that once again balance has been restored to my world.  I have found the opportunity to work on everything I truly care and feel passionate about and give the best I can.  I share this with you because like I’ve mentioned before many of you have shown me support and it’s only fair to let you all know it means the world to me, and if you are new to Beauty A La Mode then it gives you opportunity to get acquainted with the brains behind this whole operation!
With all that said – I’m working on a post introducing you to the creative force behind an award winning cosmetic line, a youtube video tag, and an upcoming collective November Haul.

As always,
Miss Mandii

UD Book of Shadows Vol. III - NYC

Ever since the Sephora early release of Urban Decay's new Book of Shadows Vol. III, in late August, here  in NYC -I've been wanting to get my hands on it! Urban Decay eye-shadows are produced every couple of seasons or so in a palette showcasing their shadows and become a great way to try out the highly pigmented eye-shadows without splurging on each one individually. Although some shadows are part of UD permanent collection, there are a few that are exclusive in each volume, and these volumes, too, are limited release. Unfortunately, I've missed out on Urban Decay's past Book of Shadows and collections, but I was able to get my hands recently on their Naked Palette which came out this spring/summer (you can read the review here) and I can tell you personally Urban Decay does not disappoint!!!!

This UD Book of Shadows Vol. III is NYC themed (which made their NYC premier release quite fitting) and is eccentric and wild as NYC itself!

Outside of UD Book of Shadows III

The inside is like a Pop Up Book
(plus it lights up when you open it)
p.s.- look at the chick on the left with the attitude (lmbo)

The set retails $54 USD and as of 9/25/10 it is still available on Sephora.com and perhaps in stores, but on Urban Decay's website it is still out of stock. It's full release is expected to be October 1st. If you love it, I recommend you go after it now before it becomes to late!!

The littlest thing to lighten me up!

Ahh, I know it's been a while but fret not my loves- I have some great things in store for you all!!! I'm the type to either go hard at something or don't go at all and so I put Beauty A La Mode on a little hiatus so I could gather some great stuff for it's lovely followers!!!

I have a couple of great reviews coming up, especially that blog review on the wonderful Sigma Makeup Brushes I did a youtube video on. If you haven't checked it out you can click here.

Today though, in this quick little post, I wanted to show you the latest find I picked up at this new beauty website I found, beflurt.com - They offer great beauty products that are either limited edition or discontinued items at a fraction of their retail price.

Estee Lauder Tom Ford Collection
       The Face Highligher- 01 Colquillee

This face highlighter is by far, one of the best I've tried to give you that nice, bright sheen look above your cheekbones, cupid's bow, or wherever you like to highlight. Unfortunately Estee Lauder does not produce it anymore since it's a limited edition- but it can be purchased at beflurt.com for a great deal (Originally $45 - on their site, $16.95!) As an added plus, I think it's packaging is adorable and I love the color of this compact!

I'm planing to get a vid up showing you how versatile this highlighter is and how great it works on any skintone, so keep an eye out on that.

In the meantime, I'll share with you a promo code for 10% off your first purchase of $30 or more on the beflurt site - enter NEWBIE at checkout.

As always, lots of love

You don't have to bare all to get "Naked" - Urban Decay's Naked Palette

So when I heard Urban Decay had released their latest palette, Naked, I knew I had to add it to my collection of makeup palettes. Palettes are a great way to collect different shades of eye shadows, blushes, etc., produced by a specific makeup line; and not to mention a great way to have all that assortment of products in one convenient package.

I can tell you Urban Decay went all out making the Naked palette look classy and luxurious by covering it with brown velvet and Naked imprinted on the outside in gold lettering, very different from the usual palette designs from Urban Decay which are colorful and vivid.

Inside, as you see above, Naked is imprinted in the fold of the palette and have a selection of 12 beautiful eye shadows.  These eye shadows are not bright or eccentric, but the perfect selection to create that perfect "nude" smokey eye look - or a perfect neutral look for work or daytime, along with shadows that are perfect for highlighting.

Shades Included:

Permanent Shades:
•Gunmetal (gray with silver sparkle)
•Half Baked (bronze)
•Naked (matte buff nude)
•Sidecar (cocoa with golden sparkle)
•Sin (champagne shimmer)
•Smog (coppery chocolate bronze)
•Toasted (rich copper)

Shades Exclusive to the Palette:
•Buck (matte nutmeg)
•Creep (onyx with golden sparkle)
•Darkhorse (bronze with golden finish)
•Hustle (plum bronze satin)
•Virgin (satin chamois)

These eye shadows are all full size, which would run you about $204 if purchased individually, but all packaged in this wonderful palette for about $44. Besides the eye shadows the Naked palette also comes with a dual side 24/7 Eyeliner in two shades and a mini Urban Decay Primer Potion.

It was literally a mission to get this palette here in NYC, but once I did I fell in love with it- it's so versatile and  the colors are great in pigment, which don't go anywhere in this city's summer heat.

If you have had the chance to try this palette or lucky enough to get your hands on it leave your feedback down below, or if you have any questions feel free to ask as always!!!

Lash Ecstasy with Diorshow Extase Mascara

If you're familiar with Dior's line of Mascaras, you would know that their mascaras preform exactly how they are formulated to. Dior DiorShow Mascara is the most popular of the line leaving lashes thick, long, and luscious. Dior latest mascara to debut, DiorShow Extase is another mascara that can be added to the must-have list.

First and foremost, I must say the packaging is beautiful- after all, we first fall in love with our eyes. The box itself is elegant, the mascara tube has a gilded chrome finish to it, and of course the mascara brush has distinct curves to it - Dior itself calling the tiered brush "inspired by the couture dresses from the house of Dior."

But beauty aside, let's get right to what we want to know- how's it formulation? It's made with special powders and 3D pigments, which are made to plump lashes as well as, other built-in treatments that reconstruct and promote stronger and fuller lashes. Another plus, the formulation of this mascara is so light, it works well with other mascaras so you can layer the effects you want to achieve if you already have another favorite mascara. (This is called Mascara Wardrobing)

a picture of my lashes before-

and after-
(no touch-ups have been made - one coat)

So, my take- I really love this mascara (if I didn't I wouldn't be writing about it, honestly) and it really does what it's supposed to do. It made my lashes thicker and darker, and more noticeable. There was no flaking and the formulation wasn't dry. I have to admit, the mascara brush is a little intimidating and you have to practice a bit to get fully separated fanned out lashes - but once you get it, you are hooked.

I was able to try it Extase along with the Dior's DiorShow BlackOut Mascara and I must say, the results are phenomenal, so I suggest that be a good start on mascara wardrobing if you're interested!

If you have any questions on DiorShow's Extase, or comments post below- I'll make sure to get back to you!

Be Clean, Moisturized and Socially Conscious all in one!

mark. by Avon recently came out with a bath and body line that not only contains natural ingredients in their formula, but what makes these products even better is that the ingredients are Fair Trade Certified. This meaning that overseas communities that are allied with Fair Trade are supported with the help of receiving fair prices and help in direct trade and community development in exchange for the farming and production of the ingredients(honey, white tea, chamomile, vanilla just to name a few) that go into these products.

There are four products in total, but I got a chance to get my hands on the cleanser and body lotion.

This is the cleanser Fresh Approach and it contains honey and white tea, blended with rice bran and sunflower oil. It has a very light clean scent and I read that besides a cleanser it can be also used as a shaving cream.  Honestly the lather was a little light, but the formula was creamy which made it good to shave with. Overall, I think this a great light cleanser that is perfect for summer when you don't want a body wash to feel like it's suffocating your skin, but you also want that intense moisture.

This is the body lotion Do The Right Thing and I think this body lotion is a must have for the summer. Not only does it contain cocoa butter, honey and hibiscus with grape and papaya extracts, it also has SPF 15 which combined makes it a great light, hydrating, sun protecting lotion. Even better this lotion is very light on the fragrance allowing for your favorite summer fragrance to shine!

To sum it all up, I think mark. introducing these great bath and body products with natural ingredients in association with them being Fair Trade certified is a good start in raising social awareness and bring support to those who work hard producing agriculture for worldwide use.

Bath Time Revival - Dove Go Fresh Review

Dove has recently re-released their collection of go fresh body washes - these with NutriumMoisture, that claims "to go beyond moisturization to effectively nourish the skin." There are four different types of body wash available:  go fresh Revive, go fresh Burst, go fresh Energize, go fresh Cool Moisture. I decided to give the new formula a try.

All four bath washes smell great, each having great scents to compliment the summer months, especially when you need those refreshing pick-me ups - go fresh Burst (Nectarine and White Ginger), go fresh Energize (Grapefruit and Lemongrass), go fresh Cool Moisture (Cucumber and Green Tea) and my pick go fresh Revive (Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena).

I love the light, refreshing scent of go fresh Revive. (Did I mention it's perfect for summer?)  It's also thick and creamy (which you can see how it just looks all lovely in the palm of my hand). It lathers up well and definitely a great moisturizing wash. It gets good reviews from me and I will be going to pick up and indulge myself in different scent once I'm done with this bottle!

If you've had a chance to try Dove's new body wash, drop a comment below - or if you have any questions!

Ms Mandii's Tips On Getting Quick Glam Lashes - Mascara tips and tricks!

Those that know me know I love the look of long, voluminous lashes.  Usually on the days that I’m not a hectic mess trying to get the kids ready, I’ll take the time to add on falsies to make my lashes look extra glam – but that only happens rarely.  On the days that I need to be out the door but I still want to draw attention to my eyes, I’ve picked up a couple of easy mascara tips and tricks that make my lashes look fabulous quickly and without much fuss.

1.  Prep your lashes your lashes by curling them.  You should do this first before applying mascara even if you are going to put on false lashes.  It’ll give a more defined shaped to your lashes before you put on your mascara.  You can always omit this step, it’s not entirely necessary – but it’s worked for me.

2.  When applying mascara, work from the base of the lashes to the tips of the lashes.  It helps distribute an even coat from beginning to end.  Also wiggle the brush to help separate the lashes and when you get halfway, hold the brush there for a couple of seconds to give your lashes a bit of lift and prevent clumping.

3.  I like to go for two -three coats of mascara (remember I like them dark). When applying an extra coat of mascara, make sure to do it while the mascara is still wet.  You don’t really want to go over dry mascara because you could encounter clumpy lashes!

4.  To achieve super fab lashes, use two different types of mascara – for example use a lengthening mascara and then a volume mascara right after, or a volume mascara and a ultra dark pigment mascara to follow up.  Just make sure not to let the mascara dry between coats (refer to tip 3).

5.  Don’t forget to apply mascara to the lashes on the outside corners of your eyes/ edge of your eyes.  It adds oomph and looks like falsies!  If you are feeling even a bit more daring put a bit of mascara on your lower lashes, they make the eyes seem wider.

6.  After applying mascara and have allowed it to dry, you can make them more dramatic by curling them over.   To add more hold to the curl, heat a metal eyelash curler with a blow dryer and then curling the lash.  (Make sure it’s not overly hot before you put that thing close to your eye.)
7.  When you’re all set and done with applying mascara and curling the lashes, add fullness by lining your upper waterline (under your top lashes) with dark eyeliner to cover any gaps.  For a night out, line the top of your lash line with a dark liquid liner for a more glamorous look.

8.  This final tip is to help you retain beautiful natural lashes – be gentle when you are removing all your makeup at the end of the day, especially mascara. If you are rough, you risk pulling out your delicate lashes -  and then what you are going to put mascara on?????
This is usually the routine I follow when I want to go all out with my lashes and don’t have much time to spend on them. I hope some of these tips and tricks can help you achieve your glam lashes without too much effort.

If you have any other tips you’ll like to add, comment below!

DIY MINX- Chic Prints, Sephora by OPI

I was soo excited when Sephora and OPI got together to produce a Do It Yourself set of "Minx" type nail prints. Usually a minx manicure can cost anywhere from $35 and up and last only about a week, so getting the    opportunity to try a more "cost friendly" alternative was a yay in my book. I must say the look came out great as you can see above and really stood out, but the wear only lasted two days, which was a major downer for me (being a busy mommy between home duties and such you expect products to withhold some abuse.) I think the adhesive could have been a bit stronger, this being solely a stick on product, but overall I think it was  okay and great for weekend out if you want to have statement nails.

instuctions (sorry, blurry-but I've outlined the process for you down below)

comes with a sheet of 16 strips (like my tiger print?)

1. Prep your nail by cleaning with rubbing alcohol to get rid of excess oils
2. Choose the correct size of strip to cover your nail, cutting the edges if too wide.
3. Stick it on!!

4. Cut off the excess tip. ( I didn't have tiny scissors around, so I took the big guns out!)

took a nail clipper to get rid of any excess edges I couldn't get with those huge scissors :x

5. File the edges with a crystal file ( Again only file I could find :O -it did the job though)

All done!!!

The whole process took me about 45 mins, not too long - and it wasn't difficult at all. Like I mentioned before, it's great if you need a quick look and quick removal.

Like always leave a comment if you've tried it, or any questions you might have!!

Maybelline's The Falsies Mascara Review

Okay, so this mascara has been out for just about a month or so - still fairly new to the market and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it since I love all types of mascara.  This being Maybelline's newest edition I expected nothing but greatness and I was not disappointed at all!!

The formula promised to deliver bold and volume intense lashes end to end, with a formula enriched with pro-keratin and fibre. The spool/brush of the mascara had a different look that regular mascara's tend to have- this one being curved. (Therefore manipulation of the wand to get even coated on the lashes may take a bit of practice.)

You can see in the before and after pics the mascara did in fact elongate my lashes and gave them bold color. The mascara brush was even able to reach to the outer corner of my lashes, which I find lots of mascaras don't. Personally, I even love the cute wispy edges of lashes!!! In all - the formula is great, not clumpy, flaky, or watery and it goes on smoothly. This mascara is a must-have!

I say to totally finish up and complete the "falsie" go under the upper lash line and over with dark eyeliner.

If you have tried this mascara or have questions or comments- feel free to post up down below!!

My Pink Me up for the Summer!

So this was supposed to go live yesterday, for National Pink day 6/23, but the kiddies had me sidetracked after a long afternoon at the beach!!
A nice healthy glow is a must for the summer and of course, we can achieve that with a good accent of blush on the apples of our cheeks! Pretty much any blush would do and in any rosy tone, regardless if it's drugstore or high-end you'll be sure to be pleased with nice flush of color.

I picked six blushes to showcase, they are all similar in color but three are from mark./AVON and the other three are from Nars.

Sunlove glo is a dark peach pink, somewhat coral in color and a matte blush and is best used with a very light hand since you don't want to look overdone in this blush, but it is still buildable to work up to the right color you'll like.

Hushbaby is a mosaic blush consisting of a brown pink, pink, and peach pink tones which blended together work very well on a variety of skin tones. This blush works great as an illuminator over foundation to give you that nice shimmer of color without it being too overbearing.

Afterglo is the most notorious of the mark. blushes because many beauty bloggers tend to describe this blush as a dupe (exact copy) of the very popular Nars blush - Orgasm.  Afterglo is a peachy pink (more pink) and it does have slight shimmer to it, but I find I have to be a little more heavy handed on picking up color with afterglo to achieve the same color results as Orgasm, but I must admit once applied, it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

These are the Nars Blushes

Orgasm is pinky peach color and has gold shimmer in it so it really does add a bit of a golden flush to your complexion but not enough to make you look glittery,

Super Orgasm is the super charged version of orgasm (think 10x the color intensity). This one I would recommend to definitely apply with a light hand so you won't overdo on the shimmer. Besides that, the amount of shimmer does work for some skin tones, especially more tan complexions since it does add more warmth into the skin tone making it appear dewy.

Sin is more a dusty rose, great for those with darker complexions. I chose this on because in the summer I do tend to get really dark and some of these blushes will not show up too well on me. Sin does give me that extra umph in color and at the same time it's not matte so I do get a glow in my complexion as well.

Hope this gives you some great ideas on what blushes to play with for the summer! Any questions just comment down below!

My Current Bronzer Picks for that "Summer Glow"

I love that summer is here and I can enjoy some extra time in the sun and get a bit of color back into my "tan" complexion, but for the past couple of years I've really been more protective about how much sun exposure I put myself under since those UV rays have been killer out there. I make sure to put on my SPF lotion and I take care not to over bake my face. Usually this results in my face being just a tad lighter, but I correct this by using the following bronzers that even out my face tone and give me that nice all-over "summer glow".

smashbox - Halo Glow Color Boosting Powder

This is one my favorite powders because it does exactly it's meant to do. It enhances your skin tone to a beautiful bronze no matter what color complexion you are and the fact that it looks so natural makes even better. Besides being great as a bronzer, it works just as awesome when you use it as a face powder alone without foundation. I love using it when I'm in a rush and I want to look done.

NARS- Bronzer in Casino

All the beauty buffs are familiar with Nars' Bronzer, Laguna - but as much as I loved it's color, it's way to light for my complexion. So I went a little deeper with Casino and it's color is a dream on my skin tone (I'm an NC42-43 MAC) . I use this bronzer more for a deeper golden look that looks great if applied on the cheeks, temples and forehead - and can even be as a contouring powder it applied with a heavier hand.

mark.- Glowdacious Illuminating Powder in Shimmied Up

This powder definitely gives that "glow" you look for in the summer - but be warned this is very shimmery, but not glitter shimmer, so it's tolerable. I normally use this powder over my foundation as a "highlighter" because it illuminates my skin tone but it doesn't make it too light still leaving me with a nice hint of color!  If you are looking for a more bronzed look- there is also Amped Up which is quite darker than this powder.

If you have any bronzers that you love to use to compliment your summer skin make sure to share in the comments!!

Had a Girl Night Out at Shecky's!!!

If you haven't heard about this event yet, consider yourself now enlightened! Shecky's Girls Night Out is an event you get to share with a couple of your BFF's (or self) indulging in shopping and getting to see the latest fashion and beauty trends all while enjoying drinks and having a great time! You also get a goodie bag to take home filled with great products and samples!

I was able to attend Shecky's opening night of the four night long event here in NYC (June 15-19). The event was being held down in SOHO - 82 Mercer, and to my surprise there was really no long lines to enter the venue, I was greeted promptly and was able to pick up my tickets with no hassle (admission w/ goodie bag  can range $20-$40) .

Inside I was able to check out the vendors which carried and array of items from beautiful artisan jewelry, designer clothes, cosmetics, bath and body creams, and candles. There was also a wine pairing mini seminar, along with Maybelline offering makeovers and consultations. I can't forget to include that there where a couple of cocktail stations featuring drinks from companies like Bacardi, Budweiser, Midori and wine tasting by Polka Dot.

Unfortunately didn't bring my regular cam with me to take pics of the venue to give you a more in depth look into the Shecky's event, but I made sure that I made my goodie bag stay intact so I could post up pictures!!

This bag was stuffed and heavy!!

Just some of the products included in the bag!!

The next event Shecky's is holding is a wine and food tasting event in August here in NYC - I will most likely be going and I'll make sure to keep you updated on that!!

You can click on the link to take you to Skecky's website to check out any events in your city!

Quickie no fuss Glue on Nails!

On my last post, I wrote on how amazed I was by the Kiss Lightening Speed Gel Tip kit that I decided to give one of their other products a try. This time I went with the Kiss Everlasting French which are basically full press-on nails. Now this I was really skeptical about because I've done these before years ago and they have looked full on cheesy and fake, but I don't know what they have done to the product, glue, nails - they looked unbelievable after I had put them on. Best of all, I've been wearing them for five days and they are still on! I love this product so much I'm buying a stack of these!!
Basically the kit includes the set of glue-on nails, a nail file, and pink nail glue.

Next you just pick out and sort the nails according to the corresponding nail that would fit your nail bed. Make sure the nail is not too wide or too small, you may need to file down the sides for a better fit. I would then use the nail file to lightly buff your natural nails to leave a clean surface so the glue-on nails can adhere better.

Just place glue on your natural nail, making sure to completely cover the nail and then place the glue-on nail firmly starting from the bottom to the tips making sure you leave no gaps. If you do notice a gap, lift the nail quickly and re-glue.This is to prevent water or debris getting under the nail. Once you get all the nails on you can remove the tabs and file them down to the shape you like.

These glue-on's can last more than 5-6 days and after a week you should remove them, just so your natural nail doesn't weaken and you can let your nails breathe. I love these nails now because they are less harsh than acrylic nails and they really do look great, especially if you just need a quick nail pick-me up!

If you've tried them before or any questions or comments, hit me up!
