Looking for a new fragrance? Basics to help you pick a great perfume!

My last weekend mission of finding a new perfume to add to my collection is what inspired me to write today’s blog. I know sometimes we tend to just go run a pick up a perfume we immediately smell on someone else or when we are bombarded at the perfume counters and then end up hating it and realizing “it’s not your scent.”  Choosing a new perfume is quite a task and here are some tips that will hopefully help you out the next time you are on the hunt for a new fragrance.

The first thing when picking a perfume one needs to be a bit familiar with the types of fragrances.  You have a wide range of floral, oriental, woody, citrus, and fruity- just to name the basics and all speak –well “smell” for themselves.  Most fragrances will combine different scents of each category or mix different smells from other categories to create a fragrance.  Here is where we get a bit complex – but I bet this will help you picking out great perfume- or help you figure out why you love your favorite perfume so much.

Besides picking out a perfume based on just the type of fragrance it is you can also choose or narrow them down based on their notes. Every fragrance has different level of notes- or scents that come together.  Top notes in a fragrance are the scents you first smell when you spray it on, mid notes are the scents you take in a couple of moments later which add a more to the top notes of a fragrance, and the base notes is the scent that lingers once the top and mid notes are gone and give the fragrance it’s depth.  The mid and base notes are the scents that make a perfume smell great on someone else, and when you try it- you’re not flattered, and it’s usually of course- different people’s body chemistry will change the way these notes smell.

Now that you know this useful information- when you go choosing a fragrance this is where it all adds up.  Pick up samples of the perfume you are interested in.  Don’t go by how a perfume smells on paper either- remember it will smell different on you.  Try a liquid sample at the counter or store.  See if you enjoy the top notes on your first whiff –but don’t ever try on more than two perfumes in a visit, and only one perfume on each wrist! Remember you want to enjoy the mid notes and base notes in a perfume; you want to smell the depth to the fragrance. This might be the deal breaker on some perfume- they either smell great when you spray it on and then thirty minutes later- it’s vanished, or you can get that perfume that was okay when you spritz on but it lingers for hours and you can’t get enough of it.

Hopefully, this has been useful – and it’ll help you pick up something more precise to your taste when selecting a perfume. I’ll post my top 5 perfume picks and the most recent perfume I picked up along with info on their category and notes!

Two Tone Lips - plus news on my A La Mode Blog!

I recently posted this link on my facebook page about the two toned lip look and I really like this look!!! I decided to share here on my blog. Of course I wouldn't don this look out on a normal day, but maybe for a night out at the club possibly?! I mean it really does look fresh and you can mix and match a whole assortment of colors to add your own flare to this look! I might upload some pics of what looks I came across.

So yeah besides this being a quick post, just wanted to add that I will be changing the format on how I've been posting here on the A La Mode blog.  I really haven't had to post my daily blogs, so it will be a little more random on the days I post. However, there will be little tid bits here and there daily on my facebook page! So if you haven't become a fan on facebook of the blog, please do!! You'll definately find little stuff I don't get a chance to post here on that page!

Thanks,
 Miss Mandii :)

Fashion Friday: Newest Spring Picks!

Decided to post up a couple of things I picked up within the past couple of weeks!

These are three pairs I ordered from Urban Original. A pair a gray flats with a rose detail and black flats with a gold/pearl detail. I figure flats are great for doing those on the rush errands and I have to be out the door in a hurry. The heels are cute lace-up booties which pair up greatly with an arrange of outfits.

I got these scarves at a little fashion boutique and they where 5 bucks each! The one on the left is white and yellow and the left has a mix of red, coral, gold, and turquoise. These are great add-ons to a pair of shorts or jeans with a tank top. They add a splash of color and are great for these days that turn unexpectedly cold!

I got this headband from Forever 21 cause it was so colorful! Again great piece to add color to a plain outfit or hairstyle!

Must-Have Monday: Nudes and Reds, Soft and Bold Lips for Spring!

Back from my mini vacation- and well, just posting a quickie blog to get the week started. I figured might as well start it with something we all can adapt for spring, and that’s lip-color! Personally, I love just using the nude lipstick for a night out when I go heavy on the eyes – or for that pretty bright spring look when I go pastel on the eyeshadow. You can even play up the nude lip and go for a pretty pale pink that is a must for spring also. If you really like to go bold- I suggest the hot red lips is a must! Don’t be afraid to try it because you are unsure what how the red will look – just give it a go with a bit of gloss and you are ready for a day out! The red lips for the day look must be very simple with the rest of face, but for night-time it’s perfect also with dark lashes and silver shadow.

Just remember when applying lipstick, as a base, use a lip-liner similar to the shade of lipstick to line and shade your lips for maximum staying power and prevent the color from bleeding or smudging.

I hope it this inspires you to try out these shades and even go a little crazy on bolder shades you might be afraid to try!
